These gray and brown days are causing me worry
As I sit by the window alone
Contemplating calling you on the phone

Three hundred miles to the north
In that little log cabin where we used to stay
Missing you more than I should
I think I’ll go for a walk in the woods

Daylight - lend me some time before
Darkness to clear my mind as I walk in the woods

I pull on my old flannel coat
The one that you say makes me look like Paul Bunyan
Pour sunflower seeds from the toe of
The moccasin boots you bought me in Mahnomen

I fill up the little pot stove
With ironwood logs that will smolder all day
Past the paintings you left by the door
I quickly slip out to keep the heat from escaping

As I step out into the cold
My breath rises, freezing like words left unspoken
In icicles under my nose
When you leave them hanging they just grow and grow

We used to talk about everything
Now I talk to the trees

I follow the trails of the deer
Leaving no footprints behind as I wander
Leaves crumple under my feet
Colored in yellow, red, orange, and burnt umber

I stop for bit to admire
A paper birch grove, forest pearls against the somber
Late autumn hardwoods and pines
Until the first snow when they hide in the white
